The mountains seemed to go on and on…
From my bedroom window.
Over the weekend I went on my first solo wilderness overnight in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
This spectacular view from the top of Stairs Mountain, the reward for a long hike carrying a fully loaded pack, awaited me as I reached my camp for the evening.
As the sun was setting to the west, the pastel glow cast over the landscape to the south-east was breathtaking.
The mountains receding into the distance seemed to go on forever.
The fire in the sky over the mountains to the west, especially about 15 minutes after the sun went down, was better still.

I had hoped for an equally glorious sunrise view in the morning, however the weather had other plans.

Not the sunrise view I was hoping for, but still an outstanding trip into the wilderness.

Thanks Scott. As I mentioned in my reply to Connie, I’ve been wanting to go backpacking and camp in the wilderness for most of my life. At 48 I finally did it for the first time. It won’t be the last. I’ve camped a lot with my wife, but always within site of the car. This wilderness thing is so much better. I’m already planning several multi-day excursions for next year.

So very true Tina. I think the hardest part about good landscape photography that so many people overlook, is being willing to put yourself in the right place at the right time. Whether it’s backpacking in 6-8 miles, or leaving the house at 1 in the morning, or both. And then if the weather doesn’t cooperate like it did this weekend, being willing to do it all over again, and again, until you get the photo you have in mind.
So true Jeff, got one of my favorite shots ever in the pouring rain in a sunrise shoot where the sun never showed 🙂
Now that’s even better. I love it when the weather conditions cause me to have to re-think the scene. I too have come away with some great photos when the weather didn’t play nice.

Thanks Connie. I’ve spent a lot of time, and given up on a lot of sleep to get to these places when the light is at its best. This is the first time I’ve actually backpacked in to be there for sunset, and stayed over for sunrise. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for most of my life, but I figured I should wait until I turn 48 to actually do it. 🙂
Your photos are experiences when viewing. Spectacular! I have a question, I am an amateur photographer posting my photos, how do you post your signature watermark in the corners of your photos?? Mahalo-
Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoy them.
What image editing software do you use? In Lightroom, watermarking is very easy, and I can help you with that. However, I used an older version of Photoshop(CS2) that I no longer have, to create an image of my signature. So without being able to sit at your computer and muddle through it in person I won’t be of much help there. I may be an ok photographer, but PS expert I am not.
Thank you for the quick response. I get asked that question a lot. I only have my cameras and an IPad. Straight up photography,no filters and no editing skills yet. And I don’t own a computer. I was hoping it was something on wordpress that could be added. Some day I am going to buy a Mac!

Thanks LB. Though I left on my own, with every intention of enjoying the solitude, I wasn’t the only one on the mountain top that evening with the same idea. Fortunately there were only two other tent sites and my neighbors for the evening were quite pleasant. Totally alone would have been nice, but having a bit of company was nice too.

Wonderful photos, I can only imagine what it must have felt like to be there. I like the morning photo a lot, doesn’t matter there was no sun. The foggy atmosphere looks really great.

I clicked on your FB shot and I loved it, but I can’t become a fan – not over there ;). Yes, in spite of enormous effort that view and the incredible photo you have ended up with were worth it.
I do understand, thank you anyway for taking a look. For me, it being my first backpacking overnight in the wilderness, it would have been worth it if I left my camera at home. As if that would ever happen 😉
