Sunday’s Hidden Treasure

Getting up close and personal with one of my favorite summer visitors to the lake.

And there’s a snake in the picture too!

As a water snake lays on a branch over the water, basking in the warmth of the sun, a golden colored damselfly rests on the snake's back.

  2. Is it poisonous?

    February 24, 2013 at 4:29 pm

    • Nope, not at all. We only have one poisonous snake in NH, the Timber Rattlesnake, which is endangered (and therefor protected) in the state. Unfortunately I’ve never seen one. I hope to though, from a safe distance of course.

    • Thanks Madhu! Even though I’m not afraid of snakes, I actually like them, I was sitting safely in my kayak. :-)

      February 24, 2013 at 4:50 pm

      • ‘Safe; depends on the distance between the snake and the Kayak :-)

        • Now that really sucks! I very sorry to hear that. We only have one poisonous snake in our state, and I’ve never seen it.

Again, sorry to hear about your dog. :-(

  7. I agree with Tina! Snakes fascinate me… as long as they don’t crawl around me… Beautiful capture!

    February 26, 2013 at 2:38 pm

    • They really are fascinating aren’t they? But I don’t mind if they crawl around me :-D

  9. Nicely captured Jeff, but I wouldn’t want to get too close, even if it isn’t poisonous.

    February 27, 2013 at 7:22 pm

    • Thanks Jim. I can understand that. With snakes it seems there’s not a lot of middle ground, most people either love them or hate them.

I’ve always been one of the former. In my life I’ve probably caught, admired, and released well into the hundreds of them since I was a kid. Especially when I was a kid. I’ve also had a few of the larger constrictors as pets over the years. They are an enjoyable animal to come across in the wild.

  10. Beautifully colored snake …. did you capture that with a zoom lens? I just purchased a zoom that reaches 300′ away. Still getting my eet wet on that one. GREAT shot ….

    • A zoom, yes, but I was actually quite close, maybe 5 ft. away. I wanted to get close enough to get a good shot without spooking the snake.
