Nature Through The Lens

Weekly Photo Challenge, Create.

“You don’t take a photograph, you make it.”

- Ansel Adams

All the photos below were made, “created” if you will, not simply taken.

To me, taken implies I just showed up and happened to be pointing my camera in the right direction at the right time. Made however, conveys the effort that went into the creation of the photograph. From choosing the subject and composition, to the willingness to be on location at 3 in the morning or kneel in an icy mountain stream, all to capture the image you have envisioned.

As the sun peaks above the horizon, it sets the sky on fire. Mt Washington, NH

A foggy sunrise over New Hampshire’s granite coast. Rye, NH.

My suggestion to you is to get out there and create!

  1. I can’t believe you think I’m good… seriously these are way better :) Anyway lets not argue, let just agree that we think the other person is better :)

    • Apples and oranges, we both have completely different styles, and we’ll leave it at that. :-D

  2. That is one of my favorite quotes! Fantastic Photographs, Sir! Well done!

    • Thank you very much!

      June 22, 2012 at 9:32 pm

    • Another blog Stephanie? How do you find the time? ;-)

      June 22, 2012 at 9:38 pm

      • Ugh, don’t ask! LOL I guess because I am camera-less and school-less at the moment I don’t have much to post on my photo blog. I kinda thought it would be interesting to have a personal blog, maybe, we shall see how it goes :)

        June 22, 2012 at 9:41 pm

        • If I hadn’t clicked on “more photos” I wouldn’t have had a clue. At first I thought “what the hell did I do wrong?” when I ended up on your flickr page.

          June 22, 2012 at 9:52 pm

          • LOL, I forgot I was logged into this account and not my photo one when I saw your Facebook post. After I posted the comment I realized, you probably wouldn’t know who it was.. whoops. :)

  3. Cool images and nice effect! When you mentioned of “right time”, I could imagine, It must have not been easy especially waking up early before sunrise. Getting the gears and equipment ready. For me, I’ll probably have to drag myself out of bed. Yet I can see that it is very rewarding. Thanks for sharing :-)

    • Thanks Paul. There certainly is a lot of sleep deprivation involved in being a landscape photographer.
      :-)

  4. Great photos.
I really like the first two of them.

    June 23, 2012 at 1:08 am

    • Thanks Cornel, with any luck the ones I make tomorrow morning will be even better.

      June 23, 2012 at 5:58 am

  5. I have never doubted that your images were ‘made’ rather than taken, and that is the basic difference between you and I :-) Something about the last one appeals to me very much more than the others, although they are far more dramatic!

    June 23, 2012 at 4:25 am

    • Thanks Madhu, I’m glad my efforts show.

To me that last one is just so peaceful. Nothing overly dramatic other than the great light I was fortunate enough to capture. Just the calm peace of the sun waking up the landscape. Being there was even better the the picture ;-)

  6. Jeff you are simply a creator of amazing images. I love your work.

    June 23, 2012 at 5:13 am

    • Thanks Jude, I appreciate the compliment and I hope I can keep creating more images for you to love :-D

      June 23, 2012 at 6:25 am

  7. Bravo, Sir Jeff, stunning shots. Not that I would expect anything less from you. :)

    June 23, 2012 at 6:55 am

    • You are too kind, much too kind. Too bad you’re stuck in NYC tomorrow, the first two show what you could be seeing tomorrow morning ;-)

      June 23, 2012 at 7:29 am

      • That’d be worth getting up at crazy o’clock for :)

        June 23, 2012 at 10:21 pm

        • Didn’t get anything close to that today. You didn’t miss anything. I was able to get a few grab shots of a black bear on the way home, and I stopped at a waterfall and may have gotten something there, but you would have been less than impressed. All part of the landscape photography game though. :-D

          June 24, 2012 at 3:11 pm

          • The black bear sighting would have made my day!

            June 25, 2012 at 1:12 am

  8. These are outstanding creations and I admire all the effort and dedication put into making them. I have a slightly different atitude towards photography :) and I am happy to disagree with you. Nevertheless, I admire and enjoy your products!

    June 23, 2012 at 7:29 am

    • Thanks Paula, glad you like them.

Care to elaborate on your ideas about photography? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

      June 23, 2012 at 7:32 am

  9. P.S. some of my not that successful shots were created (and you know that) such as a messy suitcase and book post :P , but in nature I am so enchanted with what it has to give at a certain moment that I shoot it as it is and dont go chasing sunrises – this is my big argument and justification for not stepping out of my comfort zone ;P

    June 23, 2012 at 7:36 am

    • Ahh, but you are not running around, willy-nilly, mindlessly pointing and clicking. My willingness to forego sleep until I’m dead ;-) is a small, probably the smallest, part of creating a photo. I see it in your photos, even if you don’t, that there was thought put into them. Either that, or you are the luckiest person alive to come away with as many nice photos as you do by just blindly clicking away :-D

      June 23, 2012 at 7:47 am

      • You are just mellowing me ;) :D . Ok, I will admit that some of them can actually come out as some sort of creations, but I will never do what you do, and that is OK. There is only one JAS around ;)

        June 23, 2012 at 8:24 am

        • Nor should you try. There are all levels of creating photographs. Not everyone needs to go crazy nuts into their hobbies like I do. :-P You are still creating, just not taking it to the obsessive level of yours truly.

FYI, since I was named after my father, you are only partially right on that last part ;-)
